Foresight

Leadership involves looking ahead to see what is coming next. Deborah demonstrated a spirit of looking ahead.

Hindsight

While looking ahead helps tremendously with revitalization. There is a time to look backward. While studying Deborah demonstrates ability to look backwards at the oppression of Israel. Likewise, a leader must look at what kept the leader from developing. Moreover, revitalization of the church requires reflecting on successes and opportunities.

01 Scripture

Read the Book of Judges and the story of Deborah. God did not choose her only because “a good man was hard to find.” It is incorrect, she was God’s Plan B, not Plan A. I even read in a commentary that God chose her to shame Israel!

02 Insight

We meet Deborah during a dark time in Israel’s history. God’s people resided in the Promised Land but worshipped both the true God and  the Canaanite gods. God disciplined them by turning them over to their enemies. They would repent, cry out to Him, and He would rescue them by raising up a deliverer, known as a judge. During peacetime, judges settled disputes and oversaw legal matters.

03 Acumen

How many more women are in such circumstances, capable of taking on leadership roles but not given the opportunity? How does God want for leadership to be? What will the Church do about the intelligent, well-read, Jesus-following women? The answer is put women and men to work so that they both can rise to the occasion.
